Description
Auditing of account use and user actions is a critical part of the security architecture. Auditable events must be logged. If the network element becomes unable to write events to the audit log, this is known as an audit processing failure. Audit processing failures include software and hardware errors, failures in the audit capturing mechanisms, and audit storage capacity being reached or exceeded. In order to determine what is happening within the network infrastructure or to resolve and trace an attack, it is imperative to correlate the log data from multiple network elements to acquire a clear understanding as to what happened or is happening. Collecting log data and aggregating it to present the data in a single, consolidated report achieves this objective. Audit report generation should be performed on the IDPS application audit log on the organization's central log server, thus this is not a function performed by the IDPS itself.
