PECS-1 Clearing and Sanitizing


Overview

All documents, equipment, and machine-readable media containing sensitive data are cleared and sanitized before being released outside of the Department of Defense according to DoD 5200.1-R and ASD(C3I) Memorandum, dated June 4, 2001, subject: "Disposition of Unclassified DoD Computer Hard Drives."

Details

Threat
Ensure that all documents, equipment, and machine-readable media containing sensitive data are at risk from unauthorized copying and illegal distribution if not properly cleared and sanitized before distribution outside of DoD.

Guidance
1. All documents, equipment, and machine-readable media containing sensitive data shall be properly cleared and sanitized in accordance with DoD 5200.1-R and ASD(C3I) Memorandum, dated June 4, 2001, subject: "Disposition of Unclassified DoD Computer Hard Drives."
2. A release catalog shall be created, logged, and stored for at least five (5) years on all documents, equipment, and machine-readable media that has been cleared and sanitized of sensitive data before being released outside of DoD.
3. The release catalog shall be updated and verified every time sanitized documents, equipment, and machine-readable media are released outside of DoD.
4. Audit and version controls shall be in place to ensure the most recent version of the release catalog is updated and stored.
